AN INVERKEITHING club which offers support to children with ADHD is hoping a knockout fund-raiser on Saturday, August 27 will help them find a new home.

Hyperclub, which runs out of St John's Church, was set up by mum Suzie Connelly three years ago and it has since helped countless youngsters with learning difficulties or mental health problems by offering educational activities including karaoke, games and arts and crafts.

In February, Suzie, who was the winner of the Press Heart of Gold award at our inaugural Community Champions event last year, said that they faced a "desperate" situation of trying to find a new home or they could face closure.

But Suzie, whose club was one of three Charity Champion finalists at this year's Community Champions awards, is determined to grow the Hyperclub and offer greater support for more youngsters seven days a week by raising funds to help them find a new premises.

The 'It's a Knockout' family fun day, which will be held in conjunction with Re-MAX, will take place at Ballast Bank and feature a 'teletubby challenge', 'ultimate relay penguin chase', 'canon run' and 'foam pit'.

Suzie is looking for teams and individuals to get involved and said: "Our aim is to open a sensory home and a community club that we can share with the disabled sector. We're trying to relocate to a new premises which we desperately need; at the moment we just have one hall and we're trying to do the impossible.

"We need to take the kids a step further. A lot of them need one-to-one support and have conditions like ADHD, tourettes or muscle deficiencies, but it's difficult with the noise and lack of space in the hall. The kids are at a stage that we can't take them further without separate quiet or sensory rooms and we want to help them get ready for employment, for example.

"We're looking for more volunteers and if we had an open, community-based building, then there's more chance they'd come. We want to be there full-time, seven days a week, because we are only open one day a week just now, which is not enough.

"A lot of parents bring their children along for a break and it's hard for them and siblings. We've had positive feedback from schools who can see the confidence in the children.

"We only have 40 in the class but have a waiting list. We have kids coming from Kirkcaldy, Cardenden and Lochgelly after being referred to us through the ADHD clinic and we seem to be the only club in the local area that supports children with ADHD.

"We need to move on and if we had our own building we could work with adults and the elderly too. A lot of the children’s dads who are workmen, like electricians, plumbers and decorators, have said they’ll do the work for nothing if we supply the materials. They’ll come and do it up if we manage to find a building.

"Once we get that there would be no stopping us."

The fun day, which will also include stalls, entertainment and food vans, will run from 12-5pm on August 27 and to enter a team, call Suzie on 07735588480, Steve on 07825612022 or email info.hyperclub@gmail.com.
