Fifers are once again being 'short changed' by rail services as a local MSP has added further pressure on Scotrail to help Fife train users.

Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Claire Baker has said Fifer commuters should feel hard done by after Scotrail announced further investment into Glasgow train provision.

Her comments follow a long line of complaints over Fife rail travel, after local MP Douglas Chapman, MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville and Fife Council deputy leader Lesley Laird, all expressed disappointment and frustration towards Scotrail.

Ms Baker said: "Glasgow get seven extra trains yet here in Fife we are lucky if we can get seven extra carriages. Over the weekend Fifers were stranded in Edinburgh as trains ran with only two carriages. The festival is still in full swing and there are many big events and football matches to take place, yet the best we can get is the promise of some extra carriages at some time in the future. Once again commuters in Fife will be feeling short-changed by ScotRail."

This statement is response to Scotrail introducing two refurbished trains for use on cross-Glasgow services. Scotrail leased the trains as part of their £475 million train improvement programme, which aims to deliver better lighting, accessibility enhancements extra cycle space and at-seat power sockets.

A ScotRail spokeswoman said: “All the available trains we have are out working on our network. Fife services are particularly busy just now due to increased demand from customers travelling to and from the Edinburgh Festival. We operate over 2500 services every day and always strive to meet demand - which can fluctuate dependent on sporting fixtures and other events around the country.”

The Press told you earlier this month that West Fife rail passengers are being "ripped off" by unfair ticket pricing, with neither the Scottish government nor the rail operator disagreeing on the issue, yet no plans to rectify the issue are in place.

The council’s deputy leader Lesley Laird said earlier this month: “Fife commuters are being ripped off. I am extremely disappointed by the response received to date on the inequality of rail pricing in Fife.

SNP MP for Dunfermline and West Fife, Douglas Chapman, also raised concerns at the time, he said: "There is no doubt that Abellio are using Fife commuters as a cash cow and that’s unfair to those who love living in West Fife but have to work in Edinburgh or Glasgow.

“It’s up to Abellio to review the pricing structure as they are the trade operators and it’s important for them to take the first step and to admit the pricing for West Fife commuters needs to be reviewed.”

Scotrail will shortly be writing to all elected representatives in Fife to invite them to a meeting to discuss any concerns they have around rail services.
