A DUNFERMLINE man is going to great heights to raise cash for charity – by having his head shaved at the top of the Forth Bridge.

Network Rail employee Davie O'Donnell was set to leave what he called his "ridiculous" hair and beard at the mercy of barber's tools for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of his late mum Grace yesterday (Wednesday).

Davie, who also volunteers as a coach with Rosyth FC, decided to get involved with the organisation's 'Brave the Shave' campaign to help raise awareness of the support Macmillan provides to cancer sufferers and their families after Grace passed away at the end of May.

As well as raising £250 so far on his just giving page, Davie has received donations from former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher's foundation and Cowdenbeath-born former MP Dennis Canavan, and he said: "I wanted to raise awareness of Macmillan because, although it was too late for my mum, I was told about the things that they can put in place, like palliative care, and also the care they provide for relatives who are left. They give advice on how to deal with a lot of things, which is important, especially at a time when you're not thinking straight.

"I'm fortunate that I've still got my dad in Kincardine and a strong family but if you're on your own, it is a lot to deal with.

"Like my hair, my beard is ridiculous and last year when I had it cut, someone thought I looked like the Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone! I'm up for a laugh and because I work with Network Rail, I got permission to do it at the top of the bridge.

"I've had a donation from the Jamie Carragher Foundation of items to auction off so the support has been fantastic and I hope it helps give someone else the support we didn't get."

Davie added: "My mum deteriorated quickly over a few weeks and passed away at the end of May. She didn't get as far as to receive respite care and it was hard on my dad, John. They were together for 54 years and he actually survived prostate cancer a few years ago.

"Cancer doesn't differentiate between anyone and hopefully this raises the profile for a great cause."
