MP Roger Mullin has described hearing "a number of shots" following reports of a shooting at Westminster this afternoon.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police say that they are dealing with a firearms incident at the Houses of Parliament.

The leader of the House of Commons, David Lidington, told MPs that a police officer has been stabbed and that the "alleged assailant was shot by police".

Parliament buildings have been locked down while emergency services attend the incident and Mr Mullin, who represents Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, took to Twitter to say: "Heard a number of shots as was on palace yard. Police helped us to safety. I am ok everyone. Thanks to those in touch."

The Metropolitan Police have said that they are treating it as "a terrorist incident".

Mr Mullin's constituency includes Kelty, Dalgety Bay and Aberdour.
