A KELTY mum who is watching her friend fight to keep her son alive is counting on the support of West Fifers to help raise £1.2 million.

The parents of seven-month-old Charlie Gard are trying to raise the huge amount to fund the care of their desperately ill son, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder.

The couple, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, have been given just 31 days by a High Court judge to make their case to keep him alive, after doctors said his life support should be withdrawn.

Kelty mum Gemma Michelle Allan, 31, has vowed to help Connie, who she met through an online parenting group during their pregnancies.

She told the Press: “I was invited to join an online group last year for mothers expecting in August.

"There’s 60 girls from all over the UK on there and although we’ve never met, we’ve become a family and supported each other through our pregnancies.

“When Connie told us about Charlie’s health issues at just eight-weeks-old, I was absolutely devastated, my heart was broken for them. I am also a first-time mum and my son, Isaac, is only a week older than Charlie.

“As they’ve been in hospital all this time we’ve all clubbed together to send them money for food and accommodation but now we need to fund the cost of this treatment.”

After months of research, a doctor in America agreed to accept Charlie in his hospital and give him treatment that is hoped to bring the energy he needs to his organs and muscles.

Gemma has organised an afternoon of pampering for anyone who wants to do their bit.

Small business owners have clubbed together to organise the event on Saturday at Torleys Bar in Lochgelly, from 3-7pm. Tickets will cost £5.

Mini makeovers will be on offer as well as hairdressing, massages and stalls to buy the perfect Mother’s Day gift. There will even be a handbag maker there.

Gemma added: “Connie’s family are from Scotland and she is overwhelmed by the amount of support she’s received. People in England have arranged a charity evening at Twickenham Stadium.

“I don’t think she can get her around the fact a court will decide whether her child will live rather than it being their choice. We are all praying that the court will rule in their favour.

“If it was my boy I would be doing exactly the same.”
