THE engine of a West Fife car dealership is set to be turned off with the retiral of owner Stan Smart.

His departure will signal the end of an era for the East Port Garage which is due to close on April 28.

Having worked at the garage for almost 50 years, Stan said it was difficult to call it a day.

“It has been a sad decision. I have done a lot of years and have made a lot of friends but the time comes to us all,” he said.

“My father and I originally started off in 1968 and he retired about 30 years ago. My two sons are running it as well so it is a family business through and through.”

The business started in East Port before moving to its current Halbeath Road base approximately 18 years ago.

Stan said: “The motor trade has changed and a lot of business is now done on the internet. There isn’t as much time spent in the show room as the internet has changed all of that.

"The salesmanship has gone. A customer has decided on and researched what they want before they come in.”

As well as the showroom, the service centre in Campbell Street will be sold and Stan hopes new owners will come in to look after his loyal customers.

“We have 16 employees who have all contributed and the customers have supported us. Some customers have bought cars from us all their lives and have been very loyal. I’d like to thank them all.”

Stan, who is married to Jane and has two sons and a daughter, Robbe, Jack and Melanie, became a grandfather for the first time in November and is looking forward to time with his family.

“My wife has a list of things for me to do but I have always had a fascination for bee keeping so I may well get round to that as well,” he added.
