Police are trying to trace a witness who intervened when a man was assaulted by youths near Dunfermline bus station.

The 61 year-old man was walking towards the taxi rank on Queen Anne Street when he was set upon by a number of males, believed to be around 16 years of age, at around 11.40pm on Thursday, March 16.

The teenagers pushed him in the back, causing him to fall and strike his head.

During the assault the victim heard a member of the public challenge the suspects, causing them to make off from the area.

Police are keen to speak to witnesses, in particular the person who stepped into help.

PC Andrew MacKay of Dunfermline Police Station said: "This was an unprovoked attack on a man who fortunately suffered only minor injuries but was extremely shaken.

"I'm keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time and witnessed this incident, particularly a member of the public who is believed to have intervened but we have not yet traced."

This latest incident follows a host of anti-social behaviour by youths in the town centre in recent months; including urinating on poppy wreaths at the war memorial and jumping on cars like trampolines.
