FIFE PROVOST Jim Leishman has penned a heartfelt letter of condolence and support to the people of Manchester following Monday's terrorist attack on the city.

It was one of his first acts since being re-elected to the role last week.

Mr Leishman said he was deeply saddened as he wrote the letter to Lord Mayor Andy Burnham on behalf of the people of Fife.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with all those grieving or affected in any way," he said.

"It's one of the those tragedies in life now and it's such a shame for all the people involved, especially with it being young children and teenagers.

"Writing that letter was one of the saddest things I have ever had to do."

Many families across West Fife were caught up in the Manchester atrocity as they travelled south to see their favourite pop star Ariana Grande on Monday.

Mum Alyson Smith, from Dunfermline, was on her way to pick up her nine year-old daughter Lorraine from Manchester Arena when she received a frightening phone call.

She told the Press: "It just looked like something out of a movie...everybody was running around crying."

You can find out more about her story on this week's front page of the Press.
