A MAN was rushed to hospital in critical condition and two others were seriously injured after a head-on car crash in Oakley yesterday (Sunday).

The accident occurred on the A907 in Oakley, shortly before 2.30pm.

A Nissan Micra and a Ford Mondeo were the cars involved.

The driver of the Nissan was rushed by escorted ambulance to the New Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh.

A man and woman in the Ford vehicle sustained serious injuries and were taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service stated that one of the injured was 'medically trapped', which meant their injuries prevented them from being moved without potentially causing further injury.

Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to remove a 'physically trapped' casualty from one of the vehicles.

Two accident and emergency ambulances, a paramedic response unit and the Special Operations Response Team were sent to assist at the scene.

Medic One, an Edinburgh-based ambulance service, was also called upon to provide advanced medical treatment at the roadside.

A full investigation into the cause of the crash is now underway.

Sergeant Ewan Pearce, Fife Road Policing, said: "We are investigating following a serious road collision in Oakley.

"The incident happened around 2.25pm on Sunday 11th June on the A907.

"A Nissan Micra car was travelling east when it was involved in a collision with a Ford Mondeo car that was travelling in the opposite direction.

"As a result,  the male driver within the Nissan sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in critical condition.

"The male and female occupants of the other vehicle were taken to the Forth Valley Royal Hospital for treatment. However, their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening at this time.

"Anyone with information is asked to come forward."
