Fife Council is reassuring concerned tenants of tower block flats on Broomhead Drive in Dunfermline that fire safety is their top priority following the tragic fire at Grenfell flats in London.

There are 216 homes in the three blocks at Broomhead Drive in Dunfermline that are more than 50-years-old.

The local authority carries out at least one fire inspection and safety check a year with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in its multi-storey flats.

The council says it has overclad the tower blocks to enhance insulation but says the materials used have a Class 0 fire rating and do not promote flame spread.

However, to further reassure residents, the council has agreed to review future projects and existing overcladding used across Fife.

At least 12 people have lost their lives in a huge tower block fire in London this morning.

The flames ripped through the 24-storey building in a short period of time.

John Mills, head of housing services at Fife Council, said: "Our deepest sympathies go to the families and friends of loved ones affected by the tragedy in London.

"We cannot, as yet, have confirmation of the cause of the fire, or why the fire accelerated so quickly to the rest of the block.

"This will come in due course from the fire authorities in London. I can reassure our tenants and residents that fire safety is our top priority for any of our houses, and particularly in our multi-storey flats.

“In the multi-storey flats, we carry out at least annual fire inspections and safety checks, working with Fire Scotland. The last inspections were successfully completed between August–December 2016.

“To tackle fuel poverty and enhance the insulation of our multi-storey flats, Fife Council has worked through a programme over the past few years to overclad the blocks of flats at Ravenscraig, Kirkcaldy, Broomhead Drive, Dunfermline, and Swan and Memorial Courts, Methil.

“The overcladding materials used are either a Rockwool insulation board, or a phenolic board, both of which achieve a Class O fire rating, confirming that the materials are non-combustible and do not promote flame spread.

“We are confident our fire safety procedures and over cladding specifications are safe.

"To further reassure tenants and residents, we have agreed to start a review of our specification for future projects, and this will include a review of the existing over cladding that has been used in Fife.

"We will issue information updates as this review is taken forward.”
