A ROSYTH charity worker saved a baby's life on a routine trip to Asda.

Hero Andy Duncan was buying supplies for his office when a 10-month-old started choking on a digestive biscuit.

Luckily, his first aid training kicked in and he was able to get out a wrapper that had lodged in the tot's throat.

Andy, 32, of Willow Crescent, told the Press: "She was the most gorgeous baby girl and when I walked past she smiled away at me.

"Ten seconds later, I heard her cough and turned around to see that her mum was clearly distressed.

"I ran down to them and I could see her complexion was going red. I quickly asked the lady if she could give me her child, I held her with my left arm and used my right hand to hit her firmly on the back.

"After three attempts, the wrapper finally came out and the Asda first aid trainer turned up.

"It was such an overwhelming feeling afterwards. Her mum was in complete shock but she thanked me for all that I did."

Last Thursday's drama was not something Andy thought he would ever have to do but he said it underlined how valuable first aid training can be.

Andy continued: "In that instance, I was so happy that I had first aid training. My subconscious must have just kicked in as I tried to keep the mother calm and just remember what I had been taught.

"Asda were very good and I am sure that they could have helped if I didn't but I'm grateful that myself and the little girl's mum managed to stop her choking.

"Her mum was shaking like any parent would in that situation, I can't imagine how she must have felt in those moments.

"She was a beautiful wee baby and and you just never know when first aid might come in handy, you might save a child's life. It felt really good that I had helped that lady and it's made me feel confident that I could do it again. It was a visit to Asda I'll never forget!"

It was neighbour John Waller, also from Willow Crescent, who got in touch with the Press to tell us about modest Andy's heroic actions.

He said: "All of Andy's friends, family and neighbours think he is a hero and this just highlights how important knowing even basic first aid training is. It can save lives. A big well done to Andy!"
