THERE will be traffic disruption and road closures in the north of Dunfermline due to Scottish Water works over the summer.

It's part of a £4.5 million network upgrade and a rolling six-to-eight week programme in areas between Pilmuir Street and Townhill Road starts on Saturday.

Ruaridh Macgregor, Scottish Water’s regional communities team manager, said: “The timing of this project is to coincide with the school holidays to minimise the impact on traffic. I would like to thank affected residents and road users in advance for their patience and understanding.

“Following this initial programme, Scottish Water will be implementing a further six-to-eight week programme to remove redundant assets from the network and carrying out road resurfacing.”

Work to instal new valves, hydrants and cross connections will take place in and around Pilmuir Street, Victoria Terrace, Arthur Street, Townhill Road, Thistle Street and neighbouring roads.

It will begin on Saturday at Pilmuir Street with a section of Victoria Terrace, between Pilmuir Street and Bannerman Street, closed for around three weeks.

As the work progresses to neighbouring streets, most of the works will be done using temporary traffic lights, keeping roads open, but Scottish Water said there will be "localised road closures in Arthur Street at the junction with Townhill Road" during the programme.

Contractor George Leslie will be carrying out the work.

Thomas Lochrie, Scottish Water project manager, said: “This work in Dunfermline is part of a wider programme across Scotland to improve customers security of their water supply and reduce the overall risk of burst mains in the network.

“During the works customers may experience some interruption to supply, a change in water pressure and/or discoloured water. If this happens don’t be alarmed, turn on the cold water tap in your kitchen, let the water flow slowly until it runs clear.”

Once the work in the Pilmuir Street is concluded, Fife Council said their aim is to complete the resurfacing of the road.

The first phase of the £130,000 roadworks, from the junction with Winterthur Lane to just beyond the junction with Victoria Street, was done during the Easter holidays.

The next section of Pilmuir Street to be resurfaced is to the junction with Broomhead Drive / Arthur Street.
