A DUNFERMLINE woman who has helped thousands of girls grow in confidence and realise their potential has received Girlguiding’s top honour for outstanding service.

Since joining the Brownies aged seven, Sue Walker has shown a lifelong commitment, continuing as a volunteer and helping young women to reach for the stars.

She became Unit Leader of 1st Limekilns Brownies and Girlguiding Scotland Chief Commissioner and was presented with the Laurel Award and specially designed brooch at a reception last Thursday.

Sue said: “I was really touched – and completely surprised – to receive the Laurel Award. Over the last five years as Girlguiding Scotland’s Chief Commissioner, I’ve been privileged to work with a brilliant team of volunteers and staff to help make sure as many girls as possible can join in the fun and adventure of Girlguiding and benefit from all that we do.

“There have been so many highlights from my time as a volunteer – from dancing and singing along with 8,000 girls at Girlguiding Scotland’s biggest ever Tartan Gig, to stargazing with my Brownies at a special space-themed sleepover.

“Since joining as a Brownie when I was seven, Girlguiding Scotland has given me so many opportunities to develop my own skills, take on new adventures and make life-long friendships – all while empowering girls and young women to do the same.”

After five years as commissioner, she passes the baton in September.
