MORE than 100 veteran Paratroopers descended on Dunfermline town centre on Saturday to celebrate Airborne Forces Day.

The Airborne Alliance paraded down High Street to Dunfermline Abbey for a memorial service followed by lunch at the Glen Pavilion.

Chairman Clinton Hicks said: “Although we have held two parades in Dunfermline in previous years this was our first attempt at a more ambitious event to celebrate the formation of British Airborne Forces.

“This included a march through the city centre with the salute being taken by HM Lord Lieutenant of Fife, Robert Balfour.

He added: "“Inside and around the Glen Pavilion were a variety of displays including historic military vehicles and their associated equipment.”

A free fall display by the Paragon parachuting team had to be cancelled and Mr Hicks said: “Sadly, strong winds prevented the Paragon team completing their display but as all parachutists know, strong winds and a large canopy are not a compatible combination."

He added: Overall we had a great day and are very grateful for the warm reception extended by the good folk of Dunfermline and the support provided by Fife Council.

"We are looking forward to a long and happy link with this most historic and welcoming of Scottish cities.”
