A SCHOLARSHIP in memory of a former staff member at Fife College for more than 20 years has been awarded to a student from Dunfermline.

Richard Dempster was elated to receive the award created after Brian Mankelow, who worked at the college's Halbeath Campus, passed away at the age of 64 in November last year.

Brian, from Dunfermline, was part of the furniture at the college and worked with the Estates Team.

As a result, the team contacted the Adam Smith Foundation and Marshall Construction to create the scholarship.

Richard, 37, has recently completed his course in NC Built Environment and will further his studies with the HND Quantity Surveying course at the college.

Having previously worked in banking and call centre sales, he decided to pursue his interest in DIY and join the course.

He said: "I was recently divorced and so I feel this is a new chapter in my life - I’m keen to make the best life possible for my two daughters alongside securing a good career for myself.

"Winning this scholarship means a lot – being recognised for my achievements at College is a great feeling.

"The funding will also mean I can purchase equipment I need to progress in my studies such as a drawing board and set squares.

"By gaining qualifications and scholarship awards, Fife College is really helping me turn my life around not just for myself but also for my family!

"It’s hard work but worth it and I would definitely recommend studying at Fife College."

Richard was also recognised for his hard work and commitment to his studies last year when he was awarded a Russell Trust Scholarship by the Adam Smith Foundation which he put towards a new laptop.

A special ceremony was held at the Halbeath Campus and Brian’s wife Anne attended with daughters, Sharon and Julie and sister-in-law Helen.

Erin Duffy, 18, from Cowdenbeath, has just completed an NPA Painting and Decorating course and she was also chosen for the scholarship.

Anne Mankelow was delighted to attend the event with her family and said: "I feel really touched that the College’s Adam Smith Foundation has set up this scholarship to support students in memory of Brian.

"He enjoyed working at the College and would have been really interested to hear all about Richard and Erin and their achievements and proud that this scholarship had been set up in his name."
