A DUNFERMLINE man gave a false name to police officers who were aware arrest warrants were outstanding for him and then was found to be possession of an illegal weapon.

Naheem Akhtar, 38, is currently a prisoner at Glenochil and had extra jail time added at Dunfermline Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

He admitted that on June 13, at Carnock Road, Dunfermline, in order to avoid detection and arrest for outstanding warrants, he gave a false name to police officers and attempted to pervert the course of justice.

He also admitted that in a public place he had in his possession a knife.

Depute fiscal Ron Hay said Akhtar was spotted by police at a bus stop near his family’s home in Goulden Place at around 10.40pm.

When they spoke to him, Akhtar gave his brother’s name but the ploy was unsuccessful as one of the officers also knew his brother.

He was arrested and taken to Dunfermline police station where he was found to have a knife in his pocket.

Defence solicitor Elaine Buist said the knife was from the family’s kebab shop in Abbeyview.

Her client’s position was that he was heading to the shop to make himself a pizza and had taken the knife with him to return it.

The court heard Akhtar’s earliest date of release for his current sentence was October 23.

Sheriff Charles MacNair gave him additional sentences of nine months and 45 days to be served consecutively.
