MORE than 500 families tackled a wet and muddy obstacle course in a fun contest at Knockhill Racing Circuit.

Children and their parents from West Fife were among those who took part in the MacTuff Kids' Family Challenge.

It involves a 3.5km race on land next to the track with 30 obstacles and everything from slides, tunnels and tyre walls to knee-high mud and streams to negotiate.

The firm previously held an event for adults but then said "why should grown-ups have all the fun?".

A spokesperson said: "We encourage kids to get active, muddy, run, jump, crawl, climb, work as part of a team but, most importantly, have fun and feel a sense of achievement at the end of the race.

"MacTuff kids is about families participating together as much too often, activities are for either adults or kids, so we have both adult and kid-size obstacles allowing you to run the course together."

The event, for kids aged five to 15 accompanied by a parent or guardian and cost £15 per participant, sold out and various awards were handed out at the end.

It was held on September 3 and one of the participants, Vicky Birrell, said: "We are just home from our first experience of MacTuff Kids at Knockhill and what a brilliant experience it was! Covered in mud from head to toe with everyone still smiling at the finish line. Great course that challenged both the kids and the adults and the atmosphere and support from everyone was fantastic."

The adult event, with races of 7km, 15km or 22km, will run at Knockhill on January 7.
