JOBS at BAE Systems at Hillend are set to be lost after an announcement that the company is looking to shed nearly 2000 jobs.

Workers at the plant – which employs a total of 112 people – were briefed this morning during face-to-face meetings at 10am.

As part of a move aimed at moving to a more streamlined structure, 375 positions will go in the Maritime Services which, including Hillend, has 3,898 employees across the UK.

BAE plans to open a voluntary redundancy programme and the job losses are expected to take place over the next 12 to 24 months.
