A ROSYTH youngster is proving to be an inspiration after learning to walk, read and speak again.

Annabelle Collins has battled back after being diagnosed with a critical brain condition earlier this year.

She was struck with a rare combination of encephalitis, which causes swelling of the brain following an infection, and enterovirus.

The five-year-old’s remarkable road to recovery sees her shortlisted for the prestigious UK Kids Count Inspiration Awards, after being nominated by Dunfermline and West Fife MP Douglas Chapman.

The MP heard of the girl’s story from Rosyth councillor Sam Steele.

Parents Steven and Yvonne, of Queensferry Road, are delighted with the nomination.

Yvonne, 33, said: “It’s her attitude that’s inspiring. Her life’s completely changed from this time last year – she’s now registered disabled and has got a wheelchair.

“Annabelle has a real thirst for life and loves to be involved in everything. She doesn’t let it get her down, even though some days are really difficult for her.”

Annabelle fell ill in November last year. A GP sent her to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy where her condition deteriorated and she was transferred to Edinburgh Sick Kids.

Her condition then became critical, with medical staff preparing the family for the worst.

However, she began to recover slowly and endured weeks of intense physio to learn to walk again. She never complained and is delighted to be back part-time with her school mates at St John’s Primary.

Yvonne added: “The staff and pupils have been an amazing support for Annabelle. Her wee sister Bethany (three), has also been a great help in her recovery.”

The Kids Count Inspiration Awards takes place at the House of Commons, where inspirational young people are recognised in Parliament.

Annabelle is nominated in the ‘Inspire the House’ category, after Mr Chapman was touched to hear of the youngster’s cheerfulness and bravery on the road to recovery.

He said: “It’s a real privilege to highlight her journey back to fitness.

“She’s a cheery soul who brings joy to her family in what has been a difficult year for them.”

Sam Steele, Rosyth councillor, added: “I suggested Annabelle to Douglas for this year’s Kids Count Awards because she’s a remarkable wee girl. I am absolutely delighted that she has been shortlisted.

“The family have been through so much and Annabelle’s strength and good humour are truly inspirational.”

The awards ceremony take place on December 5 at Westminster.
