THE children’s pool at Carnegie Leisure Centre has been closed for a year and it could yet be another two MONTHS before it re-opens.

The popular pool for families was shut indefinitely in January last year for repairs that were expected to be complete by August. However, it remains out of action.

Raymond Johnston, service manager, told the Press: “We continue to do everything we can to get this pool opened as soon as possible but this repair has unfortunately proved to be extremely complex.

“Issues with the amount of moisture within the existing pool slab arose and the drying out process took much longer than was anticipated.

"Good progress has been made in recent months though and the drying out and screeding works to the pool have now been completed.”

Following the complete removal of the tiles and floor, the existing concrete slab had been found to have excessive levels of moisture.

He warned that it will be at least a month before tots can make a splash at the centre, run by Fife Sports and Leisure Trust on behalf of Fife Council.

He said: “The screed needs to be fully dried before tiling work can begin and we are monitoring the moisture levels within the screed every day.

"Once dry, it will take around four weeks to complete the tiling work and it is hoped that this can begin in the next few weeks.

“Obviously, we had hoped to have this work completed much sooner but we need to ensure that each stage is done correctly. We appreciate the patience of Carnegie Leisure Centre customers throughout the disruption.”

Following a routine inspection of the pool, some tile “movement” was detected in the basin and it was closed and emptied as a precaution.
