THE clock tower that has stood in Kincardine for nearly 200 years is set for a timely refurbishment.

A planning application has been submitted on behalf of Fife Council to carry out external works on the structure that was constructed in 1819.

Proposals have been put forward to refurbish the existing slate roof, clock faces and timber louvres on all four sides.

The tower is a category B-listed building, and was built using square rubble sandstone.

The four existing clock faces will be removed and refurbished off-site by a team of specialists.

Lead wrought iron railings will be sandblasted and repainted before being put back in place once work to the roof is complete.

A further application for internal work is also set to be submitted later this year.

Donald Campbell, of Kincardine Community Council, welcomed news of the potential refurbishment.

He said: “I’m happy to see this work carried out.

“It’s been years since the clock actually ran properly.

“There’s been scaffolding around the tower for months now, so I guess this application explains all that.

“I know the roof had a leak which was stopping a new electricity box being fitted, so this should help that.”
