POLICE are warning the public of a FIFA World Cup lottery scam being posted through West Fife letterboxes.

South West Fife Police posted on social media the letter that claims the recipient has won £900,000 as part of an online lottery.

The letter, "From the Desk of the World Cup Online Lottery Commission", claims the online prize draw was designed to promote the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.

South West Fife Police tweeted that anyone who receives the letter should bin it.

They said on Friday morning: "Letters doing the rounds for a scam.

"Sorry, but you've not won £900,000.

"Just bin this immediately and make family and friends aware.

"Winning from a lottery you've never heard of? Just a big no."

They added that they made attempts to contact the "manager" of the lottery but he never responded.

However, they were able to do so later on Friday afternoon, and said: "Finally managed to get a very helpful chap on the phone for this.

"Answered about ten minutes of basic questions before he asked for personal details.

"His tone changed when we said it was Police Scotland.

"Suddenly a very angry man. What a shame."
