DUNFERMLINE's M&S store has escaped the chop after the firm announced its latest closures.

The retailers said this week that two Scottish shops, in Falkirk and East Kilbride, will shut by the end of the year along with another 12 south of the border.

As part of a "radical transformation" of the business, more than 100 shops will also close by 2022 as part of efforts to reshape M&S' Clothing and Home Space.

Sacha Berendji, Retail, Operations and Property Director at Marks & Spencer, said they were making good progress with their plans to reshape their store estate to be more relevant to customers and support online growth plans.

"Closing stores isn’t easy but it is vital for the future of M&S," she said.

"Where we have closed stores, we are seeing an encouraging number of customers moving to nearby stores and enjoying shopping with us in a better environment, which is why we’re continuing to transform our estate with pace.”

The acceleration of M&S’s UK store estate programme is part of M&S’s wider five-year transformation plan which will see the creation of fewer, better Clothing and Home stores.

These larger are planned to be digitally enabled, better located and more inspirational for customers to shop.

They will also be supported by an online experience across all digital channels including mobile and social, and by a conveniently located network of Food stores which offer customers a next-day collect in store service.

It is not known if this week's announcement will pose a question mark over M&S's plans to open a food hall on Halbeath Retail Park.
