A COMMEMORATIVE plaque to remember a West Fife firefighter has been unveiled today - on the ninth anniversary of his death.

Ewan Williamson, originally from Carnock, was killed in the line of duty while fighting a basement fire in Edinburgh. A large blaze broke out at the former Balmoral Bar on July 12, 2009.

Family, friends and former colleagues attended a ceremony at the now Benson’s Bar on Dalry Road, Gorgie, at 3pm.

The Fire Brigades Union organised the event and John McKenzie, their East of Scotland secretary, stated: “Ewan’s tragic death continues to live with many of his former colleagues to this day.

“He was a friend to all who knew him and an excellent firefighter. It is fitting that a permanent tribute to him will be at the site where his actions that night contributed to saving many lives.”

Ewan became the first Lothian and Borders firefighter to die on active duty when he became trapped battling the blaze. He was on annual leave but came in for overtime duty due to a shortage of resources.

Ahead of the ceremony, Denise Christie, regional secretary of the FBU in Scotland, said: “Ewan made the ultimate sacrifice while keeping his community safe.

"It will be an honour to unveil the plaque with his family there.

"I am sure it will bring them great comfort to know that nine years after his death that he is very much remembered. Ewan’s family and friends will be in all of our thoughts on this anniversary.”

The Firefighters 100 Lottery was born out of plans to mark the centenary of the Fire Brigades Union and is funding the plaque and ceremony.

It was formed to help commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of firefighters killed and injured in the line of duty and to establish a fund for firefighters and their families. The tickets can be bought at www.firefighterslottery.co.uk
