The mum of a Dunfermline tot who died of cancer is at the halfway point of an epic 100 mile charity challenge in her daughter’s memory.

Shonagh Byrne, 34, from Duloch, is one of 11 Scots taking on all four Kiltwalks in 2018. She has already raised over £3,000 for ‘It’s Good 2 Give’, the charity that helped the family through the worst of times.

Shonagh said: “The charity offered incredible support to my daughter Evie, who passed away from cancer at 26-months-old. I’ve decided to walk 26 miles for the 26 months Evie was here with us and I am so determined to complete all four.

“So far the Glasgow and Aberdeen kiltwalks have been fun but very challenging! I’ve met some incredible people on the journey and the great thing is you find out about everyone’s stories. The fact the walks are 26 miles really resonates with me and Evie is definitely my inspiration, along with my son Alfie, as I complete all the marathons.”

Evie was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer when doctors discovered a stage 4 Wilms’ tumour in June 2012. Shonagh and husband Danny practically lived at the Royal Hospital for Sick Kids in Edinburgh as their brave little girl endured numerous gruelling treatments. Sadly she died in May 2013.

Shonagh is a parent ambassador for It’s Good 2 Give, which helps young people, and their families, with cancer. Her family have raised funds for the last five years – hundreds ran a 5k race in Duloch on what would have been Evie’s 5th birthday – and were invited to the official opening of a retreat at Loch Venachar with Lorraine Kelly last year. It’s Good 2 Give trustee Susie Bradley, from Kelty, whose daughter Sammi successfully fought leukaemia, is also taking part.

Shonagh said: “With the additional boost from the Hunter Foundation and funds raised at the Michelle Obama dinner, my £4,200 plus will have a very positive impact on a charity very close to my heart.

“The retreat is a great place for families to go away and make some memories. They get five nights to themselves and it’s such a peaceful location. It’s a tiny charity so with the boost from the other charities that will be enough for four families to go for a break there.”

She added: “Alfie will also take part in the five mile Kiltwalk in Edinburgh so we will be able to celebrate the achievement together.”

The next kiltwalks are Dundee on August 19 and Edinburgh on September 16. To contribute to Shonagh and Alfie’s challenge go to edinburghkiltwalk2018.everydayhero.com/uk/shonagh and edinburghkiltwalk2018.everydayhero.com/uk/alfie
