DENNIS the Menace helped encourage kids to pick up a book at Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries last week.

It was part of the Tesco Bank summer reading challenge which aimed to get children to read at least six library books over the holidays.

The theme, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the Beano comic, was Mischief Makers with kids given a collectors map of Beanotown to keep a record of their reading journey.

For each book they read, they collected stickers to help them crack the clues and assist Dennis, Gnasher and friends to find the buried treasure!

A spokesperson for the Dunfermline library said: “We’ve been enjoying one of our most successful summer reading challenges yet – with more than 6,000 Fife children signed up to enjoy reading during their holidays – who knew Fife had so many mischief makers?

“We think our whoopee cushions giveaways may have added to the attraction!

"Having support from Tesco Bank has been brilliant and has allowed us to hold a comic Mischief Making workshop.

"Kids can create their very own Beano style comic character with Dr Damon Herd from Dundee Comics Creative Space in six Fife libraries and we very much look forward to seeing what they produce.”

The challenge, run by national charity the Reading Agency in partnership with Scotland’s libraries and Tesco Bank, saw 22 children enjoy the event in Dunfermline last week.

Chris Sibbald, head of communications at Tesco Bank, said: “We are delighted that over 40,000 children from across the country will get involved in the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge through their local library.

“The challenge aims to inspire children to pick up and enjoy reading books – something that will undoubtedly have a positive effect on their future.”
