A CROSSGATES man was found slumped over the wheel of a van at an Asda supermarket.

When police arrived at the scene they could not initially wake up Thomas Brockie but then he began struggling with them.

Brockie, 42, of Hillview Place, appeared for sentencing at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He previously admitted that on December 19, at Asda Halbeath, he was in charge of a van when unfit to drive through drink or drugs.

He also admitted that, also at Asda, he resisted, obstructed and hindered two police officers by shouting, swearing and struggling with them.

Depute fiscal Azrah Yousaf said that police received a call at 11.40pm asking them to attend at the supermarket car park as there was a male slumped over the wheel of a Ford Transit van.

“They found him asleep in the driver’s seat. The passenger said he didn’t know what he had taken but that the accused was not drunk.

“The officers could not wake up the accused and they called an ambulance. When paramedics arrived they managed to wake the accused slightly and he appeared to be intoxicated through drink or drugs.”

Brockie gave a negative breath test for alcohol but he continued to slur his speech and was struggling to keep his eyes open. He was arrested then began to struggle with the officers.

Defence solicitor Alexander Flett said: “He doesn’t have a great recollection of what happened.” He added that his client accepted he had taken Valium.

Sheriff Alison McKay fined Brockie £450 and banned him from driving for a year.
