AN INVERKEITHING man drove dangerously causing his car to overturn into a field near Oakley.

Provisional licence-holder William Briggs took a bend too quickly and flipped the car over several times.

He later caused a disturbance at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, shouting and swearing.

Briggs, 30, of Hillfield Crescent, appeared for sentencing at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He previously admitted that on March 26, in Station Road and Clinkum Bank, near Oakley, he drove a car dangerously.

He drove at excessive speeds for the road conditions, failed to maintain adequate control of his vehicle, caused the vehicle to repeatedly overturn, left the roadway and came to rest in a field.

He also admitted that on the same day, at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, he behaved in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting, swearing and kicking a hospital bed.

Depute fiscal Azrah Yousaf said that at 11.10am, witnesses saw Briggs’ car going off the road and into a field, rolling over several times.

Briggs and his passenger were able to walk away from the vehicle. Police later found Briggs hiding in a cupboard, drinking wine.

“He said the car had flipped over three times, said he was dizzy and wanted an ambulance to be called. However, he later denied all knowledge of the incident.

“At the hospital, he started to shout and swear,” added the depute.

Defence solicitor Stephen Morrison admitted: “He has a not insignificant record although road traffic matters are not his normal MO.

“His passenger was a qualified driver and he had ‘L’ plates on the car at the time. He lost control of the vehicle and he and the passenger were lucky they were able to walk away.”

The court heard Briggs was already on a drug treatment and testing order.

Sheriff Alison McKay imposed a community payback order with supervision and Briggs will attend the road traffic offenders’ group. He was also banned from driving for two years.
