CONSTRUCTION work has started on a new £240,000 play park in Dunfermline that should open in November.

An adventure trail, climbing frames, swings, see-saws and slides will be installed to the east of the Louise Carnegie Bandstand in Public Park.

It will also have a cableway, hanging beam and wind pipes, a sensory area, safety surfacing, paths, picnic tables and landscaping.

Convener of the City of Dunfermline area committee, Councillor Helen Law, said: “We’re all keen to see these exciting plans become a reality for the Public Park.

"Fife Council has been working closely with the Central Dunfermline Community Council for some time to improve the park and new play equipment has understandably been a priority.

“The previous play equipment, which was installed in the 1980s, had reached the end of its life a few years ago and had to be removed.

"Through good partnership working we’re set to see a fantastic new £240,000 play park.”

A special 'coo-moo-nity' will also be part of the redevelopment plans with the ‘Herd on the Hill’ art display.

It will see life-size cow models introduced to the park and they will be painted by local artists and businesses.

There will also be a ‘moo tube’ – a talking tube installed under the ground that will have an end near the fibreglass sculptures.

The cows, which have been installed thanks to the community council’s fundraising efforts, are a nod to Dunfermline's history when cattle grazed in the park during World War II.

It had been hoped that the play park would have opened before now, with Fife Council allocating £228,592 for the project in March 2017, but work was delayed.

The Carnegie Dunfermline Trust also contributed £10,000 towards the cost with more than £1,000 coming in from public donations.

The council said the play park, at the top of the path that leads to St Margaret’s and Commercial primary schools, should open in early November.

As well as the Public Park, the area committee granted cash for play areas in Touch, Wellwood, Rex Park, Lyneburn Park, Bull Park and for outdoor gyms in Abbeyview and Duloch Park.
