GOING the extra mile for charity is something a group of Dalgety Bay mums are getting used to.

The 14-strong group Mums on the Run is preparing to complete its fourth 24-hour Relay for Life in as many years for Cancer Research UK.

They originally came together to do the Dalgety Bay event as a tribute to their friend and fellow mum, Jennifer Gasowska, who died from cancer in May 2013.

Since then, they have organised numerous events – including a 500-mile swim/cycle/walking challenge on Arran last month – and have raised more than £30,000.

Team member Deborah Crowley said they all felt it was important to keep raising cash in memory of their friend.

“When Jen got diagnosed, we felt this is on our doorstep and we should support it,” she explained.

“We wanted to do something to keep her memory alive and also raise awareness and funds to assist other people going through a similar situation.

“The idea of the relay is it keeps going for 24 hours. Cancer doesn’t sleep so we shouldn’t.”

Not content with just taking part in the relay, the team are keen to ensure the relay day is a special event for the community.

They have secured funding to put on an inflatable zone between noon and 5pm at the event, which is taking place at Dalgety Bay Sports Centre on June 25.

As well as approaching local businesses for help – companies are still invited to get involved and help sponsor the area – they secured a grant from the Dunfermline Round Table after taking part in a Dragon’s Den event run by the organisation.

“The idea behind the zone is to attract families along to the event and give it a community feel while raising funds for CRUK. All the inflatables are being paid for by local companies and, as a result, we can just charge £3 for a wristband and all that will go to Cancer Research,” Deborah explained.

Wristbands for the inflatable zone can be purchased on the day or through the Mums on the Run CRUK Relay team’s Facebook site.
