SCAMMERS persuaded a victim to hand over a four-figure sum for three iPhones in the car park at Asda Halbeath then switched bags so he walked away with nothing.

The victim is said to be "embarrassed and deeply upset" by police, who have now launched an appeal for witnesses who may have seen the fraud.

The incident happened around 4 pm on Wednesday. Three men in a red Citroen car approached a 39-year-old man and offered to sell him three iPhones.

A four-figure sum of money was handed over and during the sale the suspects used distraction tactics to switch out the items.

When the victim checked the bag he found it did not contain the phones he’d agreed to buy.

Local officers are now urging others to be aware of this scam and come forward if they can help identify these men.

Only one of the suspects was seen by the victim and he is described as being white,  6ft tall, with short dark hair.

Inspector Ian Flynn, from Dunfermline Police Station, said: “The victim was left feeling embarrassed and deeply upset after discovering he was significantly out of pocket and did not have the iPhones he’d agreed to buy.

“Anyone else who is approached to make a similar transaction should not accept and report the matter to police immediately.

“In addition, anyone who can help us trace the suspects or who has information that can assist with our ongoing inquiries should also come forward.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
