A DUNFERMLINE man has defeated the odds and defied the docs in his recovery from a stem cell transplant.

Back in October, the Press broke the story that a Go Fund Me page set up for Steven Manderson was trending at the top of the popular fundraising site.

The SOS went on to raise £12,847 to fund a clean, warm house for Steven to recover in after fighting cancer for the second time.

Steven was told by doctors that a stem cell transplant would leave him with no immune system and a simple cold could leave him fighting for his life but so far he is taking it in his stride.

His sister, Susan David, said: “It’s pretty miraculous! Steve got out 10 days before doctors said he would and the day before his birthday!

“I don’t know what he’s made of but it was great news for Christmas.”
Steven found himself in isolation for a week after catching a bug but one morning he woke up feeing better.

Doctors said this could be false but a few days later they were happy to let him out.

Susan continued: “It was his sheer positivity and determined spirit that has got him back home.

“He asked the doctors what he needed to do and they said he needed to be drinking lots and eating.

“He did that even when he didn’t feel like it and even exercised.”

Back at home there are new double-glazed windows, the bathroom has been replaced and new carpets have been laid thanks to the appeal, which the Press helped to publicise on our front page.

Susan added: “The difference in the house is unbelievable, it’s feeling a lot more warmer.

“He will just be having a small, quiet Christmas with his immediate family which is great but we just hope that now he will be cancer-free.”

Two weeks before his treatment in November, Steve also got married to his wife, Sharron, in a small ceremony with family and his dog!

Susan would like to thank the following people for all their hard work that defines the spirit of Christmas: Harry Sinclair (builder), Mark Tanner (builder), Ian McFarlane (CR Smith), Colin Borthwick (builder), Craig Fenton and Mark Graham (BridgeView Windows), Drew Robertson at The Bathroom and Boiler Company, Johnny at MGM, Phil at City Electrical, Kevin at Rowan Timber, Gary at Keyline, Greg at Ceramic Tile Warehouse Dunfermline, Lorna at B&Q Kirkcaldy and George and DC at Howdens.
