A SUBSIDIARY of Tesco will open a new store in Dunfermline's Mercer Place on Thursday.

The former Touch pub, the East End Inn, has been turned into a One Stop shop.

A spokesperson said: "We're all very excited about welcoming customers here.

"With a great selection of products and money saving promotions, we're certain that local shoppers will be delighted with their new store.

"We hope they will join us here for our grand opening."

He said the new store will offer everyday essentials and had created a "number of jobs" that had been filled with people from the local area.

It will be open seven days a week from 6am to 10pm and will also have a cash machine, PayPoint and mobile top up facilities.

One Stop has been a part of Tesco since 2003 and there are now more then 850 of their shops across the UK.

For many years, the Noddy's Neuk pub operated from the site.

It later became the East End Inn but closed down recently and a plan was submitted to Fife Council for a change of use.

The proposals for the store proved controversial with more than 20 objections and concerns from a local shopkeeper that it would "kill my business".

Mohammed Sharif owns H&S Stores, which is just round the corner from the new store and has been operating for more than 37 years.

In June last year, he told the Press: “The way things are going, all the big supermarkets are going to kill off all the smaller shops.”

The plans were approved by the council in November.

There are also plans to turn the upper floor of the building into flats.
