AN ABBEYVIEW family is hoping a fun day event can raise enough money so their wheelchair-bound five-year-old daughter can have a new start in life.

Freya McMillan is currently unable to join in with her two brothers and two sisters in outdoor activities but that could all change with the help of a charity event run by Driftland Fife this Sunday.

Freya is the daughter of Peter McMillan, a volunteer marshal at the Lochgelly drift track, and was born 10 weeks premature which resulted in her admission to intensive care from birth.

She then underwent an MRI scan which led to her being diagnosed with Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL).

And as a result of the PVL, Freya developed Cerebral Palsy Quadriplegia – which affects her four limbs – which would soon lead to epilepsy after seizures from the age of three.

The family are looking to raise £600 so they can buy a specially-adapted tricycle which would give her the physical support needed so she can enjoy family outings as it can attach to either of her parents' bikes.

Paula McMillan, Freya's mum, said: "Freya's Cerebral Palsy stops her from sitting unaided, standing and walking, so she is in a wheelchair most of the time. Whenever we go outdoors, she needs to be in her wheelchair.

"We all love to go outdoors and go on adventures but, unfortunately, for a lot of activities, we are restricted.

"Freya needs the proper support to keep her sitting up as she has very poor trunk control which makes sitting and balancing very difficult.

"It would mean the world to us and to Freya to have something for her to enjoy our adventures in!"

The fun day will feature drift demonstrations, drift taxis with some of Scotland and northern England's best drivers, public drifting, a show and shine, as well as prizes to be won.

If the £600 target isn't reached on the day, Driftland will make up the difference and will treat Freya's brothers and sisters if they surpass their goal.

The event starts at 12pm and runs to 5pm.

Entry is £10 for adults and £5 for U16s with 50% going to the appeal with drift taxis costing £20, or two for £30.
