ONE is a six-foot plus cuddly bear, who hates Raith Rovers and once sledged down the steps of a stand during a game involving his beloved Dunfermline Athletic.

And the other is a game for a laugh Dunfermline man who supports Celtic and once braved a shave at the top of the Forth Bridge, with former Rangers striker Mark Hateley wielding the razor.

But now it’s personal with Davie O’Donnell throwing down a charity challenge to Sammy the Tammy – a head-to-head race round East End Park on spacehoppers!

The volunteer Rosyth FC coach, who works for Network Rail at their Inverkeithing depot, got the idea to race the Pars’ mischievous mascot from one of his pals.

And he explained to the Press: “We’re raising funds for Barnardo’s and have been thinking of different ideas.

“One of the boys at work, David Southern, is a big Dunfermline man and said he’d give me £20 to go around East End Park on a space hopper and give Sammy the Tammy a race.

“I think this is a mad idea but one of many!”

Davie is a charity ambassador for Network Rail and is always keen on a challenge.

He said: “Last year I raised £1,500 with Brave the Shave on top of the bridge, and it would raise the profile of the charity and the club too.”

He’s also collected items for Dunfermline Foodbank, and travelled to Cumbria with donations for victims of Storm Desmond in 2015.

His close shave with Hateley raised £1,500 for MacMillan Cancer Support in August last year. The former England striker shaved off Davie’s beard and hair for MacMillan’s ‘Brave the Shave’ campaign in memory of his late mum, Grace.

Network Rail employees have selected Barnardo’s to be their charity of choice until March 2019.

And Davie and his workmates are planning to support it through fundraising, volunteering, gifts in kind and payroll giving to help the charity with their work to transform the lives of some of the UK’s most vulnerable children.

Now he’s ready for another fundraiser and has West Fife’s most famous bear in his sights.

No stranger to madcap antics, Sammy got into bother with the police in 2011 when he appeared on the pitch in a cardboard “tank” and pretended to fire on Raith Rovers fans.

As yet there has been no response from the bear.
