A DUNFERMLINE restaurant owner has called on Fife Council to clean up its act after bin bags were left scattered at the front of his newly-opened eatery.

Nihat Oymak opened Antioch in Bridge Street earlier this month but contacted the Press last week as he was fed up of sacks of waste being left on the pavement.

“The flats don’t have bins so the rubbish has to be put out on the pavements and sometimes they don’t pick them up for two or three weeks – it stays on the pavement,” he said.

“On Tuesday or Wednesday, they were all over and the pavement was blocked.

“There were 10 to 15 bags and about six or seven in front of my door. If I was a customer, I would not go into a restaurant with all that outside. This is not the first time it has happened.”

Fife Council service manager Martin Kingham said: “The wheelie bins were taken away because the only place to store these was in the close to the flats, which created a potential fire hazard and blockage of the only escape route.

"Residents were therefore issued with sacks for their waste. We wrote to residents in November asking them not to put out sacks until just before collection day.

"This seemed to have resolved the issue. Our collection crews start at 6am and the city centre area is their first port of call.

“Recent disruption to our collection service meant that bags were left for longer than usual but this situation has now been resolved.”
