STAFF at Asda petrol station in Halbeath contacted police after a man filled up and drove his car under the influence of drugs.

Officers were called at 7.30am when a customer expressed concern over David Doig's vehicle at the fuel pumps in Dunfermline.

Doig, 37, of Cleish Gardens, Kirkcaldy, previously admitted that on June 22 at Halbeath Retail Park, he drove a car while unfit to drive through drink or drugs.

He also got behind the wheel without a licence or insurance.

Depute fiscal Jade Doig said he had filled up his car at the petrol station and drove up to the payment kiosk.

"Staff could tell he was intoxicated and police attended," she said.

"Officers found two people in the car and the accused was in the driving seat. Mr Doig was found to be disqualified from driving and a medical professional assessed him to be impaired by drugs."

Defence solicitor Yvonne Mckenna said: "It was confirmed that Mr Doig had been taking sleeping tablets and he had been disqualified from driving since December, but not for drink driving.

"His first conviction for drink driving was in 2000 when he was a young man and there had been a seven year gap.

"He has recently split up with his partner of 15 years and that relates to the recent convictions."

Sheriff Derek Reekie told Doig: "You have seven convictions for driving which seems to suggest a complete disregard for road traffic laws.

"Reports give the impression that you are not remorseful, but I misunderstood your compliance with the road traffic programme, in that you missed it because of medical reasons.

"However, I will make clear to you that custody is at the very forefront of my mind."

Sentence was deferred until December 7 for reports and the continuation of a community payback order with a road traffic programme requirement.
