THE children’s pool at Carnegie Leisure Centre in Dunfermline remains closed and it’s not clear when it will re-open.

It’s been shut due to a problem with the tiles since February but repairs were due to be completed and tots allowed back into the water by the end of August.

However, the pool remains shut and no date has been given for when it will be back in use.

Raymond Johnston, service manager for property services, said: “Fife Council apologise for the continued closure of the junior pool. However, following the complete removal of the tiles and floor, the existing concrete slab has been found to contain excessive levels of moisture. This requires to be dried completely before the new screed and tiles can be laid.

“We are continually monitoring this and once a satisfactory reading has been achieved, a revised programme of works with timescales will be issued.”

Back in May, the council said that a planned closure for essential repairs to the channel and surrounding tile work was to be extended “following the discovery of displaced tiles in the bottom of the pool”.

A specialist tiling contractor was being sought and the works scheduled to take 12 weeks.

The pool had been closed and emptied as a precaution in February after a routine inspection detected some tile “movement” in the basin.

At that time, the council said they were “investigating why some tiles have lifted in the junior pool and the extent of the repair works that will be required”.

The centre is run by the Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, on behalf of Fife Council.

A message on the trust’s website states: “Children’s Pool currently closed for maintenance works. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.”

The leisure centre, in Pilmuir Street, reopened a year late and £10 million over budget in January 2012 after a £21m refurbishment.

Since it reopened, there have been snagging issues with temporary fixes applied and disputes over liability with the contractor, Barr Construction.

Among the problems were mechanical and electrical defects, problems with air quality and the training pool roof and leaks from the junior pool.
