A DUNFERMLINE councillor has warned that residents could lose recycling facilities after a fire in Abbeyview.

On December 14, a fire was reported to Fife Council at the recycling point within the public car park at Abbeyview Community Centre.

James Calder, Dunfermline South councillor, is now calling for the “minority” to stop ruining the service for those who use it.

He said: “It is sad that a minority of individuals abuse our community recycling facilities.

"There was a recent fire in Abbeyview that forced the council to remove the burnt-out recycling bins.

"On top of this we have seen people flytipping at our recycling sites and this is completely not on.

“I would urge this minority to not ruin things for the majority who make use of these facilities for their recycling.

"Fife Council are currently reviewing the recycling facilities and there is a risk that they could be removed from areas suffering from fly-tipping and vandalism.

"I am asking anyone with information about offenders to report them to help ensure that we don’t lose any of these sites.”

Brian Robertson, service manager (commercial and waste transfer operations) at Fife Council, confirmed that a decision will be taken as to whether the replacement bins will stay.

He said: “The fire was reported to us on 14th December and is the latest incident of ongoing vandalism and fly-tipping at the site. The damaged bins were removed.

"We have replaced them for the festive period and a decision will be taken in the New Year as to whether these will remain permanently.”
