THE spa and health suite at Carnegie Leisure Centre is shut until further notice for "specialist" repairs.

It closed partially on Friday, May 18, as work is carried out on the spa pool and surrounding area.

Fife Sports and Leisure Trust (FSLT), who run the facility on behalf of Fife Council, have apologised to customers.

A statement on their website said: "The spa will remain closed pending specialist repair works being undertaken.

"Works to improve the spa pool surround and steps will mean that a temporary full closure of the health suite will be necessary from Wednesday, May 30, until further notice.

"We will keep customers updated with the progress of works and sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused."

A Press reader highlighted her concerns about the condition of the steps beside the pool.

Denise Aitken said: "Looks like whoever did the tiles in the centre did a really bad job and this looks like it is also structurally unsafe.

"Is it going to be the same joke that they will have to tender who's doing the work so it will take months or years to fix?"

Fife Council refuted the claims that the building was unsafe.

Raymond Johnston, service manager, commented: "There are no issues with the structure of the building – this work is to improve flooring in the area and to carry out planned remedial works to the spa pool."

The children's pool is also still closed more than a year after shutting indefinitely in January last year.

A routine inspection revealed tile movement in its basin.

Following the complete removal of the tiles and floor, the existing concrete slab had been found to have excessive levels of moisture.

The trust previously said the repairs had taken "longer than expected" with partition panels being removed this week.

Providing an update on their website, they said: "We are pleased to announce that the normal access route for swim customers to the main and training swimming pools from the changing village will resume from 29th May 2018.

"In the children’s pool, water quality circulation and testing works are being undertaken with tile finishing due for completion by contractors in readiness for our re-opening – date to be announced very shortly (June 2018).

"Once again we would like to apologise for the length of this closure and thank you all for your patience in this matter."
