DUNFERMLINE councillor Helen Law has called on Fife Council to redesign properties that were devastated by the fire at Dollar Court.

Cllr Law said she had concerns about the small cottages for some time because they only have one exit.

Although she reiterated no residents had any worries about fire safety, she believes this is a chance for the housing department to redesign the small properties.

“I was pleased to see spirits are so high among the residents when I visited,” she said. “I was quite shocked by the damage so I’m very relieved that no-one was hurt.

“However, it does raise concerns that I’ve had for some time about the the design of the units. They are in need of improvement.

“They are very small and were built over 40 years ago – I don’t think the council would build properties like that now.

“People enjoy their time there but they need more light. It’s a chance to look at the area again.”

John Mills, head of housing, said: “I’ve discussed potential improvements to Dollar Court with Councillor Law and this was followed up with a site meeting with Paul Short, service manager.

“I would like to reassure tenants that these improvements will be prioritised and actioned. The properties are safe and we’re waiting for the report from Scottish Fire & Rescue on the fire. The most important issue is that all of our tenants are safe and no-one was injured.”
