Dunfermline Foodbank had a boost of young volunteers last Wednesday after children from Culross Primary School donated 54kg of food.

Primary Seven pupil Sophie Parry, Primary Six pupils Maisie Wallace and Rebecca Marshall, Primary Five pupils Luka Tarnawski and Cameron Cochrane and Primary Four pupils Aine Easdon and Charlie Stirling made sure their items got to the foodbank safely and were given a special tour by volunteer, Janet Gibson.

The children were shown what would be in a typical three-day food basket for a single person and got to have a peek into the foodbank’s meticulously organised store cupboard where their donations, which included everything from UHT long-life milk to pasta, would be stored.

Class teacher, Louise Dalglish told the Press how the children were inspired after foodbank volunteers previously held an “eye-opening” workshop in the school.

And after deciding to have their own collection, the youngsters were given a helping hand by their parents, who rummaged through their own cupboards to see what they could give to those less fortunate than themselves.

Ms Dalgish said, “The children thoroughly enjoyed their informative trip to Dunfermline Foodbank.

“They were able to witness firsthand how their tremendous collection would benefit local people.

“It was a super experience for them to be able to see how the food was organised so meticulously and the huge amount of work undertaken by the team of volunteers in establishing such a vital support facility for people on our doorstep.
