TWO bighearted Dunfermline youngsters have cooked up a idea to raise funds for charity – baking for a coffee morning!

Friends Gemma Reekie (seven) and Ava Masterman (five), of Dover Heights, will host the event this Saturday from 10am in their street for Cancer Research UK.

The Masterton Primary pupils both have grandparents fighting cancer and their kind act was likely inspired by listening to their families discussing the illness.

It’s not the first time caring Gemma has taken on a charity challenge – last year, the Press told you how the fit kid conquered a mini-triathlon for Fife Young Carers.

Gemma’s mum Heather (37) explained, “They often play together and about a couple of weeks ago they came in and said they wanted to raise money for people with cancer and people who don’t feel well.

“Both of them are very caring and lovely little girls. They’re the type of kids who listen to what’s going on. Ava’s grandfather is very ill in South Africa and it’s not like we have explained it to Gemma, we just said her gran was not well.

“At first they just wanted to go round the doors in our street and ask for money, but I suggested they had to do something to raise the funds, like what Gemma did last year.

“They thought about it for a couple of days and came up with ridiculous ideas – like a sports day for the street! – then thought of a coffee morning.

“They made their own posters and have been delivering them through doors and speaking to people about what they’re doing.

“People have said it’s brilliant and they will come along – hopefully we’ll have good weather.” The girls, along with their mums, will be making a range of baked goodies, including cupcakes, banana loaves, cake pops, tablet and top hats.

Heather laughed, “They’re very excited and have wanted to bake for the last week and a half!

“We’ve got that many people chipping in as well – neighbours are donating cakes and we might end up with a cake fest at Dover Heights!

“We’re very proud of them and really hope people come out and buy the cakes and support them, because they’re so excited about it and really want to raise cash.”
