KIDS at Commercial Primary School have a fine story to tell, which includes robots and Captain Underpants, after raising £760 to buy new books.

Primary 1-3 pupils raised the cash to update the shared reading library and now have lots of colourful and shiny new adventures to dive into.

They celebrated the success by dressing up as their favourite fictional characters, with everyone from Willie Wonka and Mary Poppins to Maisie and Iron Man joining the fun.

And the youngsters even had a go at choosing Scotland’s best children’s book.

Primary 1 teacher Cheryl Matthew said, “To launch the shared reading library, Dunfermline library staff came in to read the books that have been nominated for this year’s Scottish Children’s Book Awards.

“The pupils voted for their favourite book and went for the one about robots (Robot Rumpus)!” Cash was raised with a sponsored readathon, alongside Dunfermline Library’s summer reading challenge, that saw kids leaf through as many books as they could.

Cheryl said, “It was great fun. We’re really proud of the children and grateful to the parents. With the money we bought a mobile library trolley for about £300 so that it can be used in different areas of the school.

“We also asked Waterstone’s in the Kingsgate in Dunfermline to support with the purchase of new books and they gave us a generous 25 per cent discount which enabled us to buy more books with our money.” The trolley now carries about 120 new books and she added, “It’s good to get the children hooked on reading and now they have new books they haven’t read before.

“The Gruffalo and Julia Donaldson books seem to be the favourites, mostly in P1 they like picture books and the older ones like Captain Underpants, Horrid Henry and the Lego superhero books are popular too.” The Scottish Book Trust have also promised to supply a box of books, posters and bookmarks to encourage reading.
