WEST Fife has topped a list of shame by having the highest number of driving offences in Scotland.

Figures released by road safety charity Brake this week revealed there were 2152 careless driving and speeding offences committed in the KY11 and KY12 postcodes last year.

The total made up nearly a third of all driving misdemeanours in the Fife KY postcode areas, where drivers racked up 7028 offences.

KY11 registered 1331 offences, of which 25 were for careless driving and 1306 for speeding, while KY12’s 821 offences comprised 14 for careless driving and 807 for speeding.

Across Scottish postcodes, there were 105,807 offences in all – 3487 for careless driving and 102,320 for speeding.

Brake has now launched a campaign in a bid to reduce the five deaths and 61 serious injuries that happen across the UK every day.

It’s calling for road users to “look out for each other” and also help protect pedestrians and cyclists.

Julie Townsend, Brake deputy chief executive, said, “When drivers use roads without care for others the consequences can be tragic and horrific – people killed and badly injured, lives ruined forever, because of a moment of impatience or selfishness.

“At Brake we witness the suffering that results, daily, through our work supporting people affected by road death and injury.

“And there are wider consequences if we don’t look out for each other on roads – people afraid to walk and cycle or let their kids walk and cycle and unable to get out and enjoy their community and live active lifestyles.

“That’s why, instead of making our streets stressful, risky places, we’re asking all road users to look out for and protect each other, particularly the most vulnerable – that means drivers sticking to 20 or below in towns and villages, looking carefully at junctions and being considerate.

“Ultimately, we’re all just human beings trying to get around, with equal right to use the roads, not competing tribes.”
