THE THEFT of a charity tin from Stephens Bakery on Dunfermline’s High Street last week has been described as “way below the belt”.

The CHAS collection, which actually came to a very small total, was taken from the bakery shop on Wednesday 12th November between 10.30am and 11am.

Liz Wightman, a sales assistant at the High Street branch, was working at the time of the incident.

She said, “I just sensed something strange was going on. One man came into the shop and the other one stood at the door.

“He asked me if there was any tomato soup and I said no, only lentil, so he walked away and I turned around to get on with my work and I just thought they were up to something.

"It wasn’t even a busy time so it was really strange because you would have thought someone would do that when it is busy.

“When my manager came in she noticed it was gone and that’s when it clicked. It is just way below the belt stealing a charity tin.” Assistant manager of the shop, Gillian Wells, said, “The tin had just been changed the day before so they will have gone off with something which is probably less than a pound.

"We don’t know if the cord was cut with a knife or it wasn’t tied properly around the till but it is really low stealing a charity tin.” Police are investigating the theft. Anyone with information can call them on 101.
