WORK is under way to improve Dunfermline’s public park.

Improved lighting and junctions for walkers and cyclists, a new station entrance and signs are part of the revamp and there are hopes for a new playpark if funds can be raised by the community.

Jim Stewart, chair of Central Dunfermline Community Council, said, “Work is under way for a new lamppost in the subway of the park to improve the lighting.

"There are also improvements being made to junctions near Buchanan Street and the Watering Hole pub for walkers and cyclists travelling between the park and the Glen.

“The improvements to the station entrance will be finished in the next couple of weeks. There will be a new park sign which is being funded by Scotrail and Zero Waste Scotland funded a primary school project to design drawings made into posters to put in the school wood area.

“The drawings look great and in the coming weeks they’ll be made into posters and signs.” A new playpark needs some help to get under way. Both of the existing parks are around 35-years-old and are at the end of their lives and equipment is being removed as it fails.

The equipment is not being replaced within the next five years and almost all of it will be removed, leaving a fantastic greenspace area without a facility for kids to play.

The community council wants to raise £125,000 for a new park, to make sure it can be enjoyed by future generations and families.

“We need funding for the new playpark and it will cost around £125,000, which is an estimate based on play units,” explained Mr Stewart.

“It’s not impossible but it’s not as easy to raise the money in a town centre area compared to a village environment.”
