A DUNFERMLINE firefighting couple are hoping to win their wedding by raising money for charity.

Julia Small (45) and Liza Mackenzie (35) are through to the final six of a competition that sees competitors raise as much money as possible for the charity Cash For Kids – the couple who raises the most, wins.

The pair are currently in the middle of 11 days of fund-raising that comes to an end on Tuesday. Townhill Road residents Julia and Liza have organised lots of events to raise the all-important cash but with competition organisers not informing them of a running total, it’s a race to the finish in this weekend’s final flurry of fund-raising.

The Press spoke to Julia about how it’s all been going and how West Fifers can get involved. She said, “We’ve done lots so far and we’ve managed to get time off work as well. The fire service are backing us and we’ve managed to get all the fire stations in Fife to hold a charity car wash this Saturday.” Saturday will also see Julia taking part in a five-hour ‘spin-a-thon’ at Bannatynes on a bike but not before a Friday night ’80s disco at the British Legion.

Julia added, “Dunfermline Athletic’s community coaches are behind us too and they have had the kids in different groups coming in with onesies on and paying money. We’ve got a family day this Sunday at the Duloch Community Centre with football and classes which Fife Leisure are helping us out with.” The weekend after the fund-raising comes to an end will see five hunky firemen enter a wax-off at the fire station where a vote will take place to see who will be the lucky (or unlucky) recipient of a waxing.

Julia said, “We would like to thank everybody for all their support so far – it’s been amazing. Every penny we raise will stay in Fife and the Lothians, it’s very local.” To get involved in the events and to see whether or not they win the Forth 1 wedding competition worth more than £20,000 check out the Facebook page ‘Julie and Liza’s cash for kids fund raising’.
