BUST out the sparkles and fairy dust – it’s going to be simply wizard at the Dunfermline Children’s Gala on Saturday!

And to get in the gala spirit, watch this fascinating footage of Dunfermline Children's Gala from 1932.

http://ssa.nls.uk/film/1360 The biggest event in West Fife’s social calendar will be straight out from the storybooks this year with its theme of ‘Myths, Legends and Fairy Tales’.

The spellebrations kick off at 11am, with gala patron Lady Elgin leading the parade down the High Street, followed by gala brochure competition winner Aleesha Powrie from McLean Primary and special guests from Trondheim, who are in town to mark the 70th anniversary of the Dunfermline Trondheim Twinning Association.

Also making the magical march down the High Street will be a giant dragon, a haggis and hunter, American woodland creatures – an homage to Dunfermline’s American twin city, Sarasota – a juggling wizard, musical minstrel, a cyclops and musical mushroom stiltwalkers, a hula-hoop fairy and a troll and three billy goats who also play jazz music!

Look out too for the invading Vikings – a fitting tie-in to mark the twinning with Trondheim – and the Alhambra Commonwealth Games truck.

There’ll be a range of music laid on, with Sambangra playing their unique fusion of Asian and Brazilian styles and Drumatik drumming it up, as well as variety of brass and pipe bands, including the West Fife Schools Pipe Band, Royal Burgh of Inverkeithing Pipe Band, Tower House Samba Band, the Boys’ Brigade Marching Band, the Dunfermline Army Cadets and the Dunfermline Town Band.

The afternoon’s entertainment will include performances from Sambangra and Spartans Gymnastics, a drill by the Sea Cadets, as well as an interactive comedy and circus performance.

And to make sure there’s a happy ending, there will be a kids’ funfair, bouncy castles, ‘Beat the Goalie’, face-painting, crafts and stalls.

Gala chair Ruth Young expects to see lots of sporting legends and fairy princesses in the crowd.

She said, “We’re really looking forward to it and are really excited. Everything’s in place and we’re just waiting on the day to start!

The weather should be fair but that’s all we want.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the costumes – I’m always impressed by the effort the kids put in. There have been some years when I’ve thought they were part of the entertainment, they have been so good!

“A special thanks to FMC for supporting us again, and Fife Council have also been very helpful this year.

“A big thank-you to the gala reps for their hard work throughout the year, an extra special thanks from me to the gala executive committee, and everybody who’s made a donation, come to our Christmas concert or sponsored a child.

“Most of all thanks to the children because it’s them who make it and it’s their day.”
