A GRIEVING Dunfermline granddad’s campaign for improvements on the A92 is set to see increased safety measures implemented by the Scottish Government.

Robert Brown, of Islay Place, called for action to be taken on the busy road following the tragic death of nine-year-old grandson Logan Carrie in February when he was struck by a vehicle at the busy Balfarg junction to the north of Glenrothes.

Heartbroken Robert and wife Alice wrote to the cabinet secretary for infrastructure, Keith Brown, to voice their belief that measures such as the construction of a flyover crossing, the installation of a roundabout and traffic lights and improved lighting would help prevent further accidents at the spot where Logan was hit.

Following a meeting between the family, Mr Brown and Transport Minister Derek Mackay at Holyrood last month, Mr Mackay visited the site last Tuesday and pledged to create an official crossing, with the promise of “investing in the improvements identified in our Route Accident Reduction Plan”.

Robert, who visited the notorious stretch of the A92 with Mr Mackay and officials from Transport Scotland, told the Press, “It was quite positive and I am pleased with what happened during the visit. There are obviously a lot of things that need to be talked about but he has said he look to put a crossing in where we think Logan ran out. Another idea was for an island in the middle of the road but there is going to be a survey done about the crossing. We’ve been told that we’ll be kept informed but it could be three months before we get any answers.

“They have started to make some improvements already and while they have a flashing sign warning that it is 50mph at Balfarg, I have asked for one at the Cadham junction as well so drivers are aware. But I am surprised at how quickly this has happened and the transport minister said he was glad he came out to see it for himself. Something might get done this time and there were some good ideas, so I’m happy with what came out of the meeting.” Mr Mackay said, “My thoughts are very much with Logan’s family for the terrible loss they have suffered. I very much understand the desire for road safety improvements on the A92 and following last week’s visit, I have asked Transport Scotland to establish what the options are for a crossing point in the area.

“They will also continue to look at the wider aspects of this case. A programme of targeted maintenance is being carried out and we are investing in the improvements identified in our Route Accident Reduction Plan. “In addition, Fife Council has been consulting with local groups on how they would like the route to be improved and we will review their proposals as soon the final report is received.”
